In pursuance of a resolution passed in the Annual General Meeting of the United Assam Association of the UK (UAAUK) held in Birmingham on 22 March 2014, the United Assam Association of the UK Charitable Trust came into existence. The declaration of the trust deed was made on the 17th of May 2014 by Dr Neera Borkakoti, Mr Rishi Kakati, Ms Nina Mellor, Dr Bhupendra Dev Sarmah and Dr Jayanta Biswa Sarma (the first trustees). They were nominated as the first trustees by the Executive Committee of the UAAUK in a meeting held on 17 May 2014.

Unfortunately, the UAAUK could not provide the promised initial lump sum to be held in the trust due to the financial crisis. Eventually, four members of the UAAUK came forward to donate £500 each towards the initial amount to be held in the trust. A supplemental deed of the declaration was executed on 20 January 2016, suitably amending the original declarations to reflect the change in circumstance.

The trust became operational in the early part of January 2016 and was recognised as charitable by HMRC for tax purposes on 25 August 2016.

On 26 July, the United Assam Association of the UK Charitable Trust was recognised as a charity by the Charity Commission for England and Wales after certain amendments to the objectives of the charity in its governing documents.
